Mysore - The capital city of Wodeyar dynasty

Mysore is a quiet, and clean place. The Palace and the celbrations of Dasara festival makes it a popular travel destination. Also, Mysore is the cleanest town in India. Read on and explore the streets of Mysore.

Mysore is the place which showcases the brilliant examples of engineering and architecture of the olden times. Let's see the places that are worth visiting during your stay in Mysore.


1. Mysore Palace

Mysore Palace is undoubtedly a great place to visit. The Mysore was the capital of Mysore State under the rule of Wodeyar dynasty and the Palace was their official residence.

The construction of palace was started in the year 1897 and was completed in the 1912.


The Palace was built on the place where there was old small palace, the contract was given to British architect Lord Henry Irwin.

The palace is well maintained and is the same as it was in 1930's. You can see how Wodeyar family led their royal life here. They dinner set, and most of the other things were made of Gold.

The palace complex has twelve Hindu temples, the first was built in 14th century and the latest was built in 1953.

2. Krishna Raja Sagara and Brindavan

The Krishna Raja sagara is a dam built across the river Kaveri to provide irrigation to the land of Mandya. The dam is popularly known as KRS and was engineered by Sir. M. Visvesvaraya. 

Sir M. Visvesvaraya was a brilliant engineer that our country had. Apart from his extraordinary achivemnets in Engineering he was known for his time management. He was so punctual that people said "they can set their watch time by seeing when he leaves for work."

 A beautiful garden is attached to this dam. The garden is known as Brindavan gardens, the Music Fountain is a key attraction.

3. Mysore Zoo

The zoo is spread in a area of 157 acre(64 ha) has around 1320 animals. The Zoo was previously called as Palace Zoo. The Zoo was opened to public in the year 1902.

You get to see a wide range of species from the famous Bengal Tigers to the Spiders. Other attractions of the Zoo include Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, and a Karanji Lake.

4. Chamundeshwari Temple

Chamundeshwari temple is built on the top of Chamundi hill, Chamundeshwari temple is a Hindu temple. The original temple was built by Hoysals(Kingdom) in the 12th century and the gopura(Tower) was built by Vijayanagara rulers in 17 th century. Other attractions include a huge Nandi.

5. Railway Museum

The Railway Museum at Mysore is an outdoor exhibit of vintage Indian Locomotives. The Museum was established in 1979 by Indian Railway, and is the second of it's kind in India. The railway exhibits include ES 506 4-6-2, An Austin rail-motor car, Two royal coaches that belonged to the Maharaja of Mysore and other vintage locomotives including the steam locomotives. There is also a nice toy train.

6. Jaganmohan Palace

Another Palace in the city of Mysore and was the initial house of Wodeyar rulers, the construction of the Palace was completed in the year 1861. 

This palace used as their home; as the Mysore Palace was under construction. They came here because the fire turned the Mysore palace to ashes. Note: At the current Mysore Palace an another old palace was there. 

Now Jaganmohan Palace is an art museum.

Other attractions in the city include Lalitha Mahal, and Folk Lore Museum.
